Perspective Article: Fruit flies in biomedical research

We review the literature to identify examples of Drosophila research that made a large clinical impact, and argue that flies will continue to help advance the entire field of biomedical sciences. Note the Director of the NIH responded to the criticism we made regarding the reduction of NIH funding toward Drosophila research, and he assured that the NIH will continue to strongly support model organism research in the years to come.
